With the shower grouted I am now finished with this project. I am very pleased with how it turned out and so is the client. Much like a new piece of art they show off this bathroom to guests. For me there is nothing more exciting than at the end of a job or the place of an art object in someone’s home to have them thank me for giving them something they can adore.
The grout really finishes the piece. I used varying size grout lines and tile heights, the end result is contrasting piece that uses very traditional tiling methods in conjunction with areas that seem as though they are emerging from the wall while other bits receed. This object was a joy to make and I am very excited to push the limits of this medium in a future project.
Making art is communication? We hope to affect those who view a piece of work. What better place to do this than in someone’s bathroom; in their shower. There they are nude with it, in a most primal state, they cannot help but to be a part of it because it surronds them.
This shot was taken prior to grouting, which will be done today. I will post pics of the grouted enclosure tonight.
For this shower the clients had a pile of tiles and gave me free reign. Having done it I now know I could do much more with this medium and hope to do so in the future.
The New York City subway platforms are not all that clean and they are the last place you expect to see someone performing art. Sure you will see someone playing guitar, drums, dancing etc., but it is always happening with a collection plate in front of them. There is nothing wrong with that, it takes a lot of guts and self confidence to put yourself on display. I find the platforms to be an exciting place to perform the spore box. I especially like the F train because of its wide platforms, with trains arriving on either side. This makes for a challenging set up of the box, trains arrive in the station blowing the sections of the object over forcing me to start over. An odd mix of people ride the F train which makes for very interesting feed back.
Do you make things? You better if you are coming to read this blog! So do ya? If you do and you want to post a pic on the site and maybe swap work with me drop a line and lets chat.
What is the most important thing we can do as artists? We can make something damn it!! We can’t just talk about making things we have to sit down, stand up, pace, jump up and down, whatever it is that we do when making but we have to do it. I can’t think of anything worse for an artist of any sort than time spent not making their work. Make something!! Make something!!
When I leave the studio for a good amount of time and think about the work I want to make I always feel that I can make it easily once I get back into the studio. Making art isn’t like riding a bike it is not muscle memory it is something that has to be worked through, mulled over through the act of making. Making shows us the way to the completion of our artwork.
