Sporozoan Cavities

sporozoan cavities
Sporozoan cavities is a suite of 15 Intaglio prints. I have been working and reworking this image for years now. I thought it was time to document it in a way more fitting than just occasional visual reference. The suite is built around the idea of telling the story of how the sporozoan became such a strong icon in my work. My interest in varying the way a particular image can change based on how it is coloured brought me to the decision of making 25 prints of each image in a la poupee. All of the plates are complete and have been proofed but printing the editions has not happened yet. All 15 images are edition’s of 25, printed on Rives BFK Tan 22×30 (plate size 18×24), and then 25 of each in a la poupee combined with 50 prints of the cover print which is on 30×44 paper with a plate size 24×36 makes for 800 prints. It is no small task and I look forward to completing it.

Shrine

“The sporozoan’s shrine to the mapping of the parasite.” is a piece I made in 2002 for a large group show. This picture is a detail of the sporozoan’s display box.

Drawing with pins and thread.

pins in dress

Making a dress is not too much different then making a drawing, painting or print. You are drawing out shapes with pins and thread and using fabric as you would paint for colour. The object is only different in that it is wearable instead of something only to be looked at. The art object changes on the body of the wearer.

Music and Memories.

I found this site last night. Music and Memories. Check it out it is a lot of fun.

Beauty is always right in front of us we just have to allow our selves to see it.

Next step for the sporozoan embroidery project.

dress pieces cut
rob sewing 1I decided that the sporozoan embroidery project needed to change a little so I started making a dress to embroider onto. It was a combination of a lot of things that brought me to this point. My new love of fashion was one one of them but even more so was just the feel of fabric. When I started to cut it and sew I felt passionate about it the same way I have felt about painting and printmaking. Now that I have cut the first pieces and begun to put it together I am more excited about it. I have made several drawings of articles of clothing I want to make and am working every night on constructing the dress.

Make your own flag!

Sporozoan Front Detail
Bjork’s new song “Declare Independence” declares we should make our own flag. This is a great song with a grinding and accelerating pace. Bjork has always intrigued me with her strong voice and flawless visual sense. I believe making your own flag is a statement of individuality in a culture where almost everyone wears someone else’s flag. Sporozoan is my flag. The symbol and the act of making it envelope me in my art and allows me to express points of views in subtle ways. Asking people to send me articles of clothing for me to embroider allows the sporozoan to spread in a fluid way.

Wearable art.

alexander-mcqueen-fashion-designer.jpgAfter a season of Project Runway I am obsessed with fashion or more to the point for me wearable art. In looking around at clothing designers I found Alexander McQueen. McQueen’s designs are truly paintings and sculpture on the body. And if you go to the Special Projects piece of his site you will see a visual feast.

Making something beautiful is a pessimistic act.

twodrawings
While in college a fellow student said this to me during a critique. It was meant to be an off handed insult and I took it as such. The longer I thought about it the longer I felt that I should have taken it as a compliment. First of all my peer said I had made something beautiful and I am a pessimist at heart. Why shouldn’t I make beautiful things that enhance the lives of people who look at them? Why shouldn’t I make things that are beautiful in this world, which is cowering in the face of blind nationalism and fundamentalist hatred. Art can be the tolerance in this world, it can bring us together and show us what we can truly aspire to. All we need to do is allow it to become part of our lives.

Amused to Death.

On September 1st 1992 Roger Waters released this album. I bought it because I love Roger Water’s, always believing he was the heart and soul of Pink Floyd. I knew nothing about Amused to Death. I immediately loved it. A lot of people who like Pink Floyd find Roger Water’s too interested in concept albums, even though both The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon are perfect examples of Water’s vision. He doesn’t write poppy songs (even if iTunes puts him in the pop genre????), he has a vision that he is following. Water’s music is a combination of traditional rock, spoken word and ambient sounds mixed with background noise none of which is arbitrary.

I lost this album when I moved from Seattle to New York and today finally got around to replacing it. It is even more poignant today than it was in 1992. Water’s created an album that not only condemned a particular war but war and killing in general, along with media, sports, chain stores and yes the human condition. The composition does not feel like he is angry, as many of his writings do, but rather that he is just fed up. Fed up with our inability to learn from our mistakes, move past our histories and become a more tolerant and less self serving society.
